History of Acid Rain

The phenomenon of acid rain began to be known since the late 17th centuryit is known from the book by Robert Boyle in 1960 under the title "General History of the Air". The book describes the phenomenon of acid rain as a "nitrous or salino-sulforus spiris".

The term acid rain was first used by Robert Angus Smith in 1872 when describing the situation in Menchesteran industrial area in northern England. Smith explains thephenomenon of acid rain on his book entitled "Air and Rain: The Beginnings of ChemicalTechnology".
The next industrial revolution in Europe that began around the beginning of the 18th century forced the use of coal and fuel oil as primary energy to cracked machinesAs a resultthe level of precursor emissions (causative factor) of the acid rain gases SO2NOxand HCl increasedThough this precussor usually only comes from volcanic gases and forest fires.

The problem of acid rain in the first large scale occurred in the 1960s when a lake inScandinavia increased acidity to result in reduced fish populationsIt also occurs in NorthAmericaat that time too many forests in parts of Europe and America are broken. Since then initiated various efforts penaggulangannyaeither through the fields of science, technical and political.
In 1970 the U.S. began to control the emissions of SO2 and NOx with the Clean Air ActregulationsThese regulations set standards of pollutants from motor vehicles and industry. In 1990 Congress passed an amendment to further tighten the control of emissions that cause acid rainThe amendment was recorded mempu reduce SO2expenditure of 23.5 million tonnes to around 16 million tonnesU.S. also plans to reduceNOx emissions up to 5 million tons in 2010.
