The phenomenon of acid rain began to be known since the late 17th century, it is known from the book by Robert Boyle in 1960 under the title "A General History of the Air". The book describes the phenomenon of acid rain as a "nitrous or salino-sulforus spiris".
The term acid rain was first used by Robert Angus Smith in 1872 when describing the situation in Menchester, an industrial area in northern England. Smith explains thephenomenon of acid rain on his book entitled "Air and Rain: The Beginnings of ChemicalTechnology".
The next industrial revolution in Europe that began around the beginning of the 18th century forced the use of coal and fuel oil as primary energy to cracked machines. As a result, the level of precursor emissions (causative factor) of the acid rain gases SO2, NOxand HCl increased. Though this precussor usually only comes from volcanic gases and forest fires.
